O'Keefe House on Gould Street. A building of historical importance. Eugene O'Keefe, born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1827, came to Canada in 1832. He acquired the Victoria Brewery 1861 and renamed it O'Keefe Brewery later on. It became the largest brewery in Canada. He bought the house in the picture in 1879, altered it substantially in 1889, and stayed there until he died in 1913. He was a trustee of the Toronto General Hospital and a benefector to several Roman Catholic Institutions and in recognition thereof was named private chamberlain to the pope in 1909. The house was used for several different purposes until 1963, when it became a student residence for the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute.
